Why "Whining" does pay off

We're now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

This is a follow-up to my previous post about being considered a "whiner" regarding the iPhone 3GS pricing. Guess "whining" does pay off, huh?  It's a small concession but I can't help feeling like AT&T only made this move due to customer feedback.  Call it what you want - it gets results.

Craigslist expects record revenue: $100 million

Defying its anti-commercial reputation, Craigslist is expected to rake in $100 million in revenue this year, the most ever for the classified advertising site, according to a new report.

This is crazy talk. Not because Craigslist isn't widely popular but because they generated $100 million with only 30 employees. That's $3.33 million of revenue per employee! How many companies with similar revenues are doing better?  As a contrast, Google does about $21.8 billion in revenue with roughly 20,000 employees or a little under $1.1 million per employee.

Oil & Gas still rule the roost...

Having spent most of my life in the Bay Area, my view of what constitutes "big business" skews heavily towards tech. I'm sure folks from New York would say financial services and folks from Los Angeles would say entertainment. It blew me away when looking at the latest Forbes report on the world's most profitable corporations that Oil & Gas Operations dominated the top 6 by a healthy margin. What's more jaw dropping are the revenue numbers. I thought Microsoft's $62 billion was a lot but it's dwarfed more than 7 times over by ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell. Just goes to show how far we need to go to ween ourselves off petroleum based products.
