The dot com douche bags

Just read this story over at TechCrunch. Though the gist of it is technically more about file sharing and the music industry, it reminded me of the old days of 1999-2001 when all the dot-com douche bags (myself included) would cram into SOMA bars and think they were the kings/queens of the world. I distinctly remember a confrontation when one group of folks from Start Up A was monopolizing bar space and a group from Start Up B were trying to order drinks. As expected a little pushing and shoving match ensued with the requisite "Do you know where we work?" and "We're gonna buy this place!" was thrown around. Basically, young knuckle heads with too much money and too few failures in their young careers to know any better. A scant year or two later and most of them probably were unemployed. Another conversation I overheard was where a guy was talking about jumping to another start up only 3 months after joining his current one. His friend was saying "Do it man! That place is gonna take off! Take less money and get more equity. It's all about the equity man!" It was definitely a sign of the times.

As we have gone through one dot com implosion and are currently in the midst of a major recession, the number of young start ups has definitely diminished. Plus the fact that most start ups aren't getting monster investments and hiring just for the sake of hiring. The people who work at start ups today do it because they prefer to work in that environment versus trying to make a quick buck (believe me, there are far easier ways to make money than working at a web start up). This culling of the herd has definitely reduced the number of douche bags I see in the industry. But as the old adage goes, a douche bag never thinks he/she is a douche bag. Maybe someone is reading this and thinking, "This guy is such a douche bag." Wouldn't be my first time.

Why can't the Republican Party find a sensible candidate?

It Came from Wasilla...

As I've stated before, I'm not a registered Democrat or Republican (I am registered with somebody, though). However, this country needs to have a balanced mix of voices in Washington to work at its best. With Al Franken's victory in Minnesota, the Dems now have 60 seats in the Senate (though Arlen Specter is a wild card) which makes it much easier for them to push through a leftist agenda. That's not actually a bad thing per se but it does mean that one party has a big advantage in terms of setting legislation for the next few years.

The above Vanity Fair article is just another in a long string of bizarre acts coming from the Republican Party. First the Governor of South Carolina with his international escapades, now the in-fighting regarding Sarah Palin with the 2008 campaign and her supposed 2012 Presidential run. What has the GOP become when the face of your party is Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck? Why not put sensible (not to mention, intelligent and effective) candidates like Colin Powell, Meg Whitman, or Bobby Jindal as the face of the party? If nothing changes, I predict lopsided victories for the Democrats in the next few elections.

Getting Real - an interesting read so far

I've just started reading Getting Real by the good folks at 37signals. So far, it's a pretty interesting read. For those of you not familiar with 37signals, they are the folks behind some of the more popular web apps like Basecamp, Highrise, etc. We've been using Basecamp for a long time here at Centrro and I've used it for some of my side projects. What I like most about their apps is the clean design and attention to detail re: UI.

Back to the book, it's a primer of sorts for building web apps using agile software development. Though we have a pretty lean shop here, I can see the advantages of actually getting even leaner. Not in head count but in how we develop new products. Fewer meetings, very quick/general spec docs, faster and smaller product roll outs, etc. I highly recommend this book and the price can't be beat!

Interesting article about District 1 in Saigon

Dong Ngo of CNET wrote about his current trip to Vietnam, specifically Saigon (I won't call it the other name). My cousin in Saigon also wrote about his latest night out. It's been 8 years since my last trip to Vietnam and it looks like a lot has changed. But it looks like progress is being made and people are generally living better lives. Can't wait to go back.

Maybe I was a little too harsh on Curry given that we could have drafted this...

Though I still have my reservations about Stephen Curry, at least he hasn't pulled a bone-head act like Brandon Jennings. Man, you never really know nowadays who is taping what - The Sporting News reports that Brandon Jennings was caught on tape saying some inflammatory statements about his teammates, Ricky Rubio, etc. This is after Jennings said some unflattering things about Rubio and then had to back pedal. One can say he's just got a lot of youthful confidence and how we talk to "friends" is a lot different than how we would talk to a reporter. Still, he seems to have dug himself a pretty big hole with team management and some of his teammates. Again, he may turn out to be miles better than Curry but his mouth has written a pretty big check that his ass will need to cash in about 4 months.
